Parental Stress in 2024

We came across an article in The New York Times this week that really hit home. It talks about how today’s parents are more stressed than ever, according to Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General (NY Times: Parents and Stress).  Between balancing work, family life, and making sure their kids stay happy and healthy, the pressure can feel overwhelming.

“Chasing these unreasonable expectations has left many families feeling exhausted, burned out and perpetually behind,” Dr. Murthy wrote in his advisory, issued in late August.

And as kids head back to school, there’s another challenge lurking for working parents—the dreaded 2-3 hours after school when kids are out but parents are still working. Sound familiar?

At Mentmii, we know the drill. School’s out at 2 PM, but you’re not off the hook until at least 5 or 6 PM. That gap? It’s a tough spot, especially if you’re trying to manage after-school activities, homework, and maybe even squeeze in a little “me” time. This is exactly where Mentmii can help.

Mentorship = A Little Less Stress for Parents

Mentmii’s mentors aren’t just there to help your child pass time—they’re there to make those after-school hours productive, engaging, and fun. Whether your child needs help with their homework, a buddy to play sports with, or someone to share their love of art or coding, our high school mentors have it covered.

By matching kids with local high schoolers, we’re offering more than just after-school care—we’re creating meaningful connections that help kids grow. And, as a parent, you get some much-needed peace of mind knowing your child is in good hands while you finish up your workday.

Supporting Kids = Supporting Parents

As Dr. Murthy pointed out, stress is weighing on parents like never before. That stress doesn’t just come from big-picture worries but from the everyday logistics of managing work and family life. With school back in session, the after-school gap can be one of the toughest challenges. Mentmii is here to help bridge that gap with mentors who give your kids the support and attention they need—so you can focus on wrapping up your workday without constantly checking the clock.

If you haven’t read the article yet, take a minute to check it out. It’s a good reminder that we’re all in this together, and it’s okay to lean on your community and support systems.

With Mentmii, we’re here to lighten the load for you and give your kids the connection and support they deserve.
